Full Description

December 1990: A number of timbers from two vessels lifted by a mechanical digger dredging part of Buss Creek. Examined by divers from the Suffolk Underwater Studies Unit and more timbers thought to be evident under 0.8m of silt in the same area. Timbers recovered by digger were an assortment of well preserved strakes and frames, probably from two early vessels, possibly a merchantman and a much finer vessel. Also unfinished side rudder (? - two other side rudders have been found in the area in the past 10 years) in two pieces with clench nails and roves, as in early Med vessels. Returned to bottom of creek, in nets, after recording. Radiocarbon sample taken (from ?) yielded date of 1030 +/- 60 BP (S2).
Intention to remove netted timbers for detailed examination and survey the site in October 1991 (S1).
November 1991: this appears to have taken place, with 'more planks and other timbers, some embedded in clay rather than silt' (S4) - no further details.
24-26 Oct 1992: further pre-disturbance survey work located further timbers, animal bones and oyster shells - detrails and plan in (S1).
Further data held by Stuart Bacon?
