Monument record EBV 004 - Findspot of an Anglo-Saxon steering board of a boat washed up following storms.

The steering board of a boat washed up following storms in the N sea (S1) was found on the high water mark by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) After a visit I contacted Mrs Gillian Hutchinson of the National Maritime Museum, who took it away for conservation. The intention is that it should be returned to a Suffolk Museum when stabilised.
The board is of oak, it measures 4.36m, the lower half has a 'feathered' or wedgeshaped section, which at the extremity is 40cm wide, including a projecting 'kick'; the upper half fines down to a circular section of 10cm. There are 4 perforations: 1) a circular hole in the feathered portion which held a rope to raise the oar; 2) a rectangular hole at the very top of the feathered section around which sandy concretions with the impressions of ?metal fragments was massed, this would have been the attachment point to the hull; 3) a rectangular hole halfway up the circular section into which the tiller would have slotted; 4) near the top a circular hole for rope to lash the oar.
The implication of this find is that a complete wreck is breaking up, there is no other likely reasons for the oar to have been sunk, bedded in sand, and waterlogged other than that it was dragged down in a sinking. The fishermen suggest that a likely spot is the bank circa 2 km off shore from Southwold. They report finds trawled up from that spot, i.e. EBV Misc. The date range of the oar is C10-C12.
