Full Description

Site of a cross at road junction near The Devil's Handbasin (S1). `The Stone Cross often frightened horses on the Turnpike. When the cross was removed the stone block was left with the shaft hole in it' (S2).
Also reputedly site of tollgate where keeper made travellers drop their money into bowl of vinegar - plague stone? (S2).

Documentary search was conducted within the Suffolk Record Office to establish whether or not there were any documentary sources that would confirm a reference in Alfred Watkins' "The Old Straight Track" that the Stuston White Stone was an ancient trading place No documentary referes to the White stone was found amongst cartographic and documentary sources seached in the Suffolk Record Office (S4).
