Listed Building: PETTISTREE HALL (285500)

SUTTON TM 34 SW 10/134 Pettistree Hall 16/3/66 (Formerly listed as Pettistree Hall and barn to north east) II Farmhouse. C15, C16 and C17 with C19 additions and alterations. Rendered timber frame. English bond brick with plain tile roof. Two storeys with attics. L-shaped plan with single-storey service range forming an open courtyard. Garden front: projecting wing to left of early C17 date with shaped gable to its end having a central gable stack, brick kneelers, a band of two bricks depth below the parapet and 3 courses of projecting brick to the coping. The sides of the gable are convex and the stack bears two square flues joined by projecting horizontal bands of brick. To right of this wing the central portion has, at left of centre, a C19 doorway with 6 raised and fielded panels and moulded surround with a lean- to porch. To right and left of this are C19 three-light casement windows and to the first floor slightly at left of the front door is a C19 sash window of 3x4 panes. At right is a further projecting single-storey service wing with a lean-to at its gable end. To the ridge of the central range are, at left a massive chimney stack with 4 square flues, with moulded bricks to the top of the stack and joining the flues at the their tops. Similar moulded stack at right, the flues here renewed in the C20 and of less height. Hipped roof to the rear range. Left face: the C17 wing at right has a higher ridge level than the spinal range at its left and replaced C19 fenestration. 2-light horned sash window at right divided by a king mullion, of 2x2 sash panes. Similar window to the first floor with earlier sashes of 3x4 panes to each. To left of this is a ground floor window of 3x4 sash panes and a first floor window of 3x2 panes. To left of this the earlier range has a ground-floor window of 2 sashes divided by a king mullion, the lower sashes of which have plate glass and the upper 3x3 panes. To the attic is a 2-light gabled dormer window. Entrance front: doorway approximately at centre with a C19 door of 4 raised and fielded panels and 2 upper glazed panels, and an ashlar surround having pilaster strips at either side with moulded capitals and ovolo moulding to the door surround. In front of this is a C19 gabled porch with a brick plinth, open timber work to the sides and a plain tile roof. To either side of this at ground floor level are 3-light C19 casement windows. To the far right is a ground floor window of 2 sashes divided by a king mullion with plate glazing below and 3x2 panes to each of the upper sashes. At far left is a C19 window of 2x3 sash panes. The first floor has a central 2-light casement window to right of which is a 3-light C19 casement window and to left of which is a 2-light casement window with a similar to far left. Interior: Pament tiled floors at ground floor level. The kitchen has chamfered ceiling beams with stepped run-out stops. Four encased beams to the drawing room ceiling forming a cross pattern and a late C18/early C19 Neo-classical fireplace and buffet cupboards, the chimney piece having a central projecting panel with palmettes and anthemia and paterae. Lateral panels also with paterae above semi-pilasters to the sides with acanthus leaves to their necking. The cupboards at either side have beed ornament to their arches and paterae to the projecting key pieces with fluting to the springers. Early C19 staircase hall and through-passage formed in the earlier wing, the staircase having stick balusters and moulded tread ends. The staircase in the C17 wing has now lost its lowest 2 flights of stairs rising from the ground to the first floors but the newel drops to the upper flight show, having panels of faceted rustication and heart shapes to the drop knops. This staircase continues between the first and attic floors and has two flights with a half-landing and attic landing. The upper knops of the newels are similar to the dropped knops in their moulding. Stout handrail of cyma recta and cavetto profile. Splat balusters to the attic balustrade and richly-moulded flat balusters to the flights. Rectangular newel with paired upper and dropped knops to 1/2-landing. Dado panelling to flights with halved newels. Further evidence of timber framing to several first floor rooms and to the attics. Listing NGR: TM3029044488
