Volunteer with the archaeological service

Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service work with volunteers to promote, protect and conserve the archaeology in Suffolk. We also welcome work experience placements for students in 6th form or at university.

Get in touch if you are interested in volunteering with the team. Here is an example of the type of volunteer opportunities we offer; if there is something in particular you would like to do which is not listed below, please do contact us.

Historic Environment Record Volunteer

Help enhance the database of archaeological sites and learn to use digital mapping. Enhancement projects vary from inputting information from commercial archaeological reports, to transcribing features from historic maps. Training will be provided.

This role involves:

  • data entry into the industry-standard HBSMR database
  • digital mapping using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • reading and understanding archaeological reports
This role is suitable for long-term volunteering, either as a block of consecutive days or as individual recurring days, over several weeks or months.

Finds Photographer Volunteer

Support the Finds Recording Team by taking high-resolution photographs of archaeological objects. Training in using photography equipment and Adobe Photoshop will be provided.

This role involves:

  • carefully handling small archaeological objects
  • using a digital camera
  • manipulating images in Adobe Photoshop
  • uploading images to an online database

This role is suitable for both short term and long term volunteering.

Finds Recording: Self-Recorder

Regular metal detectorists can learn to self-record their finds on to the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) database. Our Finds Recording Team can help to familiarise you with the database and direct you to resources so you can learn how to identify and record your finds. IT equipment can be made available for use in the office, or you can use your own computer at home.

This role involves:

  • learning about identification of finds
  • using the online PAS database (finds.org.uk)

This role is suitable for long term volunteering.

Digital Marketing Volunteer

Use your digital skills to help us publicise our service, events and activities. Knowledge of social media and enthusiasm for digital marketing required.

This role involves:

  • using social media and creating appropriate content
  • recording social media and google analytics statistics
  • exploring the archives as inspiration for writing blog posts

This role is suitable for both short term and long term volunteering.

Unfortunately, we do not have a field team and so cannot routinely provide fieldwork opportunities.

Occasionally, we are involved with community archaeology projects; we will advertise these here as and when opportunities become available.

In the meantime, try contacting your local commercial archaeological contract unit or local archaeological society who do conduct fieldwork more regularly.
