Search Help

Simple Search

Keyword - This will perform a search in the title, summary and Parish fields of an HER record.

Time period - Choose from a predefined list of time periods.

Parish - The parish dropdown currently lists all parishes for which the HER holds monument records, including some parishes that are outside the National Park boundary. This will eventually be corrected.

SHER number - The monument record number by which the site is known on the HER.

The Reset button at the bottom of the page will clear your current search parameters.

Advanced Search

This section includes the same search functions as the 'Simple Search' ('Keyword' becomes 'Search for') but also includes the following:

Site type - Monuments on the HER are indexed against the English Heritage Thesaurus of site types. You can use the following link to view an explanation of the English Heritage Thesauri.

Find type - This tool allows you to search for specific objects that have been found and linked to monuments in Suffolk. As before, finds are indexed against the English Heritage Thesaurus of object types.

Map - You can find the area you are interested in searching by using the zoom tools on the left of the map and using your mouse to pan by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the map. You can then specify a search distance from the drop-down box below.

Grid Ref - Grid references should be provided as two letters, followed by three to five numbers for both the easting and northing. You can then specify a search distance from the drop-down box below.

Easting and Northing - These should be two sets of numbers of six digits each. Again, you can specify your search distance from the drop-down box below.

Map Search

The 'Layers' tab on the left allows you to choose which types of information you wish to display; for more information on each layer, hover your mouse over the i tool tool to the right of the layer name. Each layer will always show on the map in the order listed in the tab, so (for instance) if you wish to view the Registered Parks/Gardens in an area more clearly, it may help to turn off the overlapping layers, such as the 'HER Records' and 'Conservation Areas'. If this was performed for the example above, the map would now display as below, which has allowed both the 'Registered Parks/Gardens' layer and the 'Listed Buildings' layer to be discerned more easily:

To select a feature for which you would like more information, select the tool with your mouse and then click on the feature. This will bring up a speech bubble (as shown in both screen views above), which only displays information for the layers that are currently selected from the 'Layers' tab. For HER records, you will see that the monument reference number is highlighted in blue; clicking on this number will take you direct to the monument record.

The 'Search' tab allows you to perform searches by Grid Reference or to retrieve the grid reference of the area you are looking at on the map, by hovering your mouse over the desired area and clicking with your right mouse button. You can also do a keyword search for places, or search by postcode. The 'About' tab provides some further information on the map data shown.
