Description
SUTTON (off) WOOD HALL DRIVE TM 34 SW 10/145 Barn at Wood Hall (formerly listed as 16.3.66 Tithe Barn, SW of Sutton Hall Farm) GV II Barn. C16 or C17. Red Flemish bond brick. Thatched roof. Undivided barn with double transepts. North face: whitewashed brickwork, two projecting gabled transepts, now with clapboarding to the gables. C19 lean-to shed running along the whole of the side. South front: left hand projecting transept appears never to have had double doors. Low doorway at right with C20 cement lintel. Above this a band of 3 bricks depth. Tumbled brickwork to the gable. The right hand transept has been cut down to ground floor level, now with a lean-to roof. Lean-to open store between these two transepts with wooden posts. East gable end: projecting plinth above which is a section of wall with 6 rectangular breathers above which is a band of 3 bricks below the gable which has 2 breathers. West gable face: similar to that of east but with a C20 entrance cut in at right with double doors. Interior: Roof of 12 bays all having principals and collars, the alternate bays having tie beams. Windbracing in paired arrangement at far ends and to left and right of centre. The wall plates continue across the transepts and the principals and common rafters descend to meet them. The transept roofs do not, however, appear to have been later additions.
