Listed Building: NEWBOURNE HALL (285049)

TM 24 SE NEWBOURN MILL ROAD 3/22 Newbourne Hall 16.3.66 II* Manor House. Early C16 and early C17 with later alterations and C20 restoration. Partly timber framed and plastered and partly red brick. Partly 2 storeys and part 2 storeys and attic: basically 'T' form. C16 range aligned north-south with timber framed upper storey with exposed studs jettied on south and east sides and brick to ground floor in which is embedded part of a corner post with carved spandrel. The frame is in 3 bays, with 2 cell plan, cross entry with single room beyond. This range extended to the north: early C17 in red brick. A further C16 range, aligned east-west is linked to the north-south range at right angles by a tall, narrow stair wing. Plain tiled roofs on all wings. Flat roof to C19 accretions on west side. North-south wing has moulded bressummer on jettied sides and exposed wall plate at eaves. Both earlier wings have scattered fenestration: mainly C20 casements with leaded lights; some ground floor windows have segmental brick arches. The C17 wing window openings have cement stucco jambs, drip moulds, mullions and transomes with leaded lights all restored C20. This wing has a north crow-stepped gable with pinnacles in moulded brick. On the west wall there is a 6 course band of ashlar at first floor level, also 2 external chimney stacks. The C16 north south wing has a brick porch with crow stepped gable and moulded brick pinnacles with 2 centred pointed arch brick opening and a moulded boarded interior entrance door. The C17 range has an outshut entrance hall with 3 windows: sashes in recessed frames and an entrance doorway with pointed brick arch, partly glazed panelled door with fanlight. There is an original mullion window on the west wall of the C16 wing. The interior has decorative plaster ceilings: the one in the main room enriched with the arms of the Purpett family, plaster moulded beams; this room was once timber panelled in the classical manner, the fluted frieze, mutule cornice and part of an Ionic pilaster remain. The staircase hall plastered ceiling has wavy ribs with rose and lilly spray filling. Both C16 wings originally had crown post roofs; the one in the east west range altered later, when the original tie beams were removed and the cut-down crown posts supported on raised collars. Roof renewed C20 in the altered form. The subdivided hall to the C16 north south wing has finely moulded beams and joists. Only the top flight of the stair retains original balustrade.
