Description

TM 14 NE TUDDENHAM ST. MARTIN IPSWICH ROAD 3/26 Allens House 16.3.66 - II House. Mid C16 with extension of early C17, and alterations of C19 and early C20. 2 storeys. Hall range, with parlour cross-wing extension to right. Timber-framed and plastered; on the side wall of the parlour wing is a C17 pargetted cartouche, containing a damaged design in high relief, perhaps an achievement. Smaller motifs are reset in later external plastering. Front wall of main range rebuilt C19 up to 1st floor in flint with painted brick quoins. Plaintiled roofs, the cross-wing hipped. Internal and rear chimneys of red brick, the C17 parlour wing stack has a pair of square diagonally-set flues on a plinth with moulded cornice. Mainly C19 and early C20 casements. In the cross-wing are exposed C17 ovolo-moulded mullioned windows of 3-lights, which originally flanked larger windows now blocked. Boarded and battened oak entrance doors, early C20 or C17 restored. The main range has plain substantial framing of C16 and was originally a 3-cell house. In the cross- wing is an original newel stair with turned balusters. The parlour and chamber above both have moulded plaster ceilings, with motifs matching thos on external walls. A small C17 lean-to wing at rear is probably a garderobe tower.
