Description
SOUTH ELMHAM, ST. MARGARET ST. MARGARET'S GREEN TM 38 SW
4/73 Greenside Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Late C16. 2 storeys; attics to part; basic 2-cell end-chimney plan with later extensions. Timber-framed and rendered; some old roughcast on the east gable wall; thatch. An end chimney-stack on the east, set within the frame. All windows are late C20 replacements in traditional style: 2-light casements with a single bar. Interior in 3 bays: the 2-bay principal ground floor room has a 3" chamfer and curved stepped stops to the main beam and matching joists; a plain lintel to the open fireplace. On the upper floor, the open truss has a cambered tie-beam and very large arched braces; empty mortices in the main posts imply a possible older core to the house; remains of diamond-mullioned windows. An early C19 rear extension has typical late framing and an end chimney-stack in red brick with a high coping to the gable. The front range of the house has bean almost doubled in length by an extension of c.1980 in matching style.
