Description
ILKETSHALL ST. MARGARET SHOE DEVIL LANE TM 38 NE 2/40 Shoe Devil Farmhouse
GV II
Former farmhouse. Late C16 and early C17. Timber-framed and plastered with thatched roof. A main range, partly of 1 1/2 storeys and partly of 2 storeys, and a cross-wing of 2 storeys and attics. An internal chimney-stack in the higher section of the main range, adjoining the cross-wing, has 4 attached hexagonal shafts on a rectangular base with a small recessed panel: this bears a spurious C17 date added by the present owner. Various casement windows: in the gable-end of the cross-wing, there is a projecting moulded tie-beam above the upper window, and a moulded lintel above the lower window. One large gabled dormer to the main range with a 4-light casement window supported on small brackets. The former lobby-entrance doorway against the stack and another doorway on the front have both been blocked. Plain timbering exposed inside. The principal room of the main range is in 2 irregular bays, with the main beam off-centre, and was probably extended when the higher section and cross-wing were added. Cross-wing in 2 bays: exposed studding and ceiling in the ground floor room with chamfered main beam, curved tops with groove, and joists with lamb's tongue stops; deep middle rail. Cranked braces on the upper floor and an original upper ceiling. The newel stair beside the chimney-stack ascends to the attic. Roof in 3 bays: one row of clasped, and one row of unstepped butt purlins, windbraces. A lean-to along the rear contains the present entrance door.
