Description

FLIXTON BY BUNGAY ABBEY ROAD TM 38 NW 2/3 Abbey Farmhouse - II Farmhouse, in 2 distinct sections. C16 and C17. To the west, a wide C16 block, in a mixture of materials: the lower walls partly in colour-washed brick, the upper walls rendered and possibly partly timber-framed; the east gable wall, up to the first floor level, is very thick, rendered over a mixture of flint, stone and brick; clay pantiles. 3 storeys and attics. A chimney-stack at the east end, set within the frame, has 4 diagonally-set attached square shafts with corbelled heads. One upper 4-light casement with small panes, transome and pintle hinges, and a smaller 3-light casement window to the ground floor; in the west gable, 4 windows, one above the other, indicate the number of storeys. Adjoining on the east, and set back, is a C17 timber-framed and rendered range with black glazed pantiled roof. 2-storey 2-cell. An internal chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft. A full height gabled porch with plain barge boards has the Adair monogram set in the gable, and an early C20 half-glazed entrance door. 3 old small-paned 3-light and one 4-light casement windows, with transomes to the ground floor, and pintle hinges. At the east end, the upper gable wall is pargetted in panels, and the lower part underbuilt in brick; an ovolo-moulded main beam, with housing for a cross-beam at ground floor ceiling height indicates that this range extended for at least a further bay eastwards. Various lean-to's at the rear, one with an ornately decorated dormer in the Adair manner. At the back of the timber-framed range, a heavy window-sill on the upper floor which probably supported an oriel. The farmhouse stands on a large, roughly rectangular moated site which also contains fragmentary remains of the Priory of Augustinian nuns, founded here by Margery de Creke in 1258, and the western half of the building is thought to contain some remains of the nunnery buildings. Access not obtained. Listing NGR: TM3154486402
