Description

ACTON NEWMAN'S GREEN 1. 5377 Barn, stable and Cartlodge at Green Farm TL 8843-8943 8/196 II GV 2. Barn, with a stable adjoining to the right, and a cartlodge at right-angles to the left. C18. Timber-framed and weatherboarded; triple Roman tiles. The barn is in 5 bays: frame with a middle rail, primary braces bisecting studs, tie-beams with bolted kneed braces. Clasped purlin roof without principal rafters, the bays formed simply by the 7 collars spaced along it, in the 2nd and 6th bays straight windbraces bisect the rafters; ridge piece. An original full height porch on the north side has the tie-beams of the 2 adjacent trusses extended to form its wallplates. A lean-to along part of rear. The stable on the right is in a lower 3-bay section in similar materials and framing, but with some reused timbers. A lean-to calf-pen at the east end. The cartlodge at the left side is in 4 bays, with a rear wall of random red brick. The group is well sited, beside a horse pond, and is in very good condition. Included for group value only.
