Description

TM 38 SE WESTHALL COX COMMON 2/44 Oak Tree Farmhouse - II Former farmhouse. Circa 1600. 2 storeys and attics; 2-cell lobby entrance form to front range. Timber-framed core, fronted in C19 white brick, with the remaining walls encased in red brick. C20 concrete pantiles. An internal chimney-stack with 4 attached hexagonal shafts and small moulded brick horses, heads on the base (cf. Willingham Hall and the Manor House, Walberswick). C 20 cross windows and glazed porch. One early C19 pointed Gothic window in the north end. Framing exposed inside. Both ground-floor rooms have plain ceilings: stepped stops with groove to joists; one open fireplace with remains of timber lintel. In one first floor room, a fireplace with rusticated plastering to the brick arch. In the rear wall of the ground floor an original 2-light window with ovolo-moulded mullion, blocked, and an original doorway, square-headed and chamfered. Newel stair beside the stack. Widely- spaced studs, arched braces to corners. Original upper ceilings. Several good moulded plank doors. The remains of a C16 wing at the rear has one bay with plain heavy joists, and an end chimney-stack. Listing NGR: TM3995482486
