Description

MUTFORD TM 48 NE 2/33 Kier's Cottage - II House, latterly 2 cottages. Circa 1600, considerably restored 1980-84. Part timber framed, with exposed studding (now somewhat altered) and mid C20 brick nogging; part red brick. Original crowstepped brick gable end to left with terracotta pot finials, and some apparently original brickwork at the right hand (service) end. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys and attic. 3 cell form, originally with lobby entrance. Mid C20 casement windows, mid C20 door. Internal stack with 4 flues arranged in sawtooth form, now reduced in height; at the base of one of the flues is a protuding brick shaped like a horse's head (cf. Thorpe View, Walberswick). All 4 main rooms have ovolo-moulded main beams and cornice; the parlour also has similar moulding down the wall posts and on the fireplace lintol. Exposed joisting throughout. Original newel stairs (2 flights). It seems likely the house was built in connection with Mutford Hall, some 400m to the south. Listing NGR: TM4814887957
