TM 38 SE WESTHALL COX COMMON 2/43 Moat Farmhouse - II Former farmhouse, surrounded on 2 sides by the remains of a rectangular moat. Late C16. 2 storeys and attics. Timber-framed and roughcast-rendered; clay pantiles. An internal chimney-stack with a plain rebuilt red brick shaft. 3- light casement windows to each floor, those on the ground floor with transomes. C20 enclosed and gabled porch with C20 mock Georgian door. Frame in 5 bays including a chimney bay; 3-cell lobby-entrance plan; all timbers exposed inside. Full height studs; reversed braces at the corners; several blocked original windows, those on the upper floor with housings for diamond mullions; one doorway with arched spandrels. Plain beam-and-joist ceilings to all ground floor rooms. The partition wall to the service area has been removed and replaced by brick, and the 2 service rooms have been made into one, with a blocked stair trap in one corner. The chamber over the service rooms, probably used as a cheese chamber, was not accessible from the rest of the upper floor. The chimney-stack has 2 back-to-back hearths and timber lintels on the ground floor and a smaller fireplace with arched brick surround to the parlour chamber. On the upper floor, the trusses have cranked arched braces and cambered tie-beams. Original attic space, the roof with principals, 2 rows of butt purlins, and windbraces. Listing NGR: TM3954482388
