Description

TM 38 SE WISSETT GRAY'S LANE 2/59 Brookhall Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. C16 core, C19 casing. 2 storeys and attics. Timber-framed, encased in red brick which is not all of one date: at the south end a break in the line of the wall indicates a separate section, and a small stone panel dated 1824 is set into the south gable wall; at the north end, the gable and side walls have blue headers. Black glazed pantiles. Mid-C19 crow-stepping to both gables and the 2-storey porch on the east (garden) front. One internal and one rear stack, both with 2 octagonal shafts, moulded bases and starred caps (cf. Ashtree House, Item 5/60). C20 replacement windows: part 3-light mullion- and-transome type, part small-paned sash style with top-opening lights. 2 doors on west side with 4 flush panels; a 6-panelled door with raised fielded panels to the porch on the garden side. 2 gabled dormers with fluted bargeboards. Basic 3-cell internal chimney plan. The interior has some exposed timbering and one ground-floor ceiling has a heavy main beam and joists, all chamfered. The house stands on the remains of a large, irregularly moated site, immediately on the parish boundary. Listing NGR: TM3707181363
