Description

LOWESTOFT TM59NW YARMOUTH ROAD, Gunton 914-1/1/93 (East side) 03/10/77 Gunton Hall GV II Country House, since 1930s a holiday camp. Mid C18, extensively altered and extended 1810. C20 additions. Colourwashed brick. Slate roofs. Main 2-storey block of 3 by 8 bays. Entrance is to west, 3 bays. Central full-height bow with a 6-panelled double-leaf curved door (3 panels to each leaf) under a 6-vaned fanlight. Above is a curved 6/6 sash. The first-floor has a similar flat sash either side, and the ground floor a 6/6 sash to the left only. Overhanging eaves with modillions. Low hipped roof. 2 irregularly-placed stacks emerge over the roof-line. The south front has the centre 2 bays broken forward and against the ground floor are extensive C20 single-storey extensions. The upper floor retains its 6/6 sashes. The modillion roof overhang continues. Against the north return is a mid C19 extension of 4 by 8 bays: 2 storeys, hipped roof; 6/6 sashes to ground floor of west side and 3/3 sashes above, north return with 3/3 first-floor sashes and C20 addition to the ground floor. INTERIOR. The entrance leads to a staircase hall, the staircase balusters boarded-over. To the south is a late C18 dining room (now called The Regency Room). Complete large-framed panelling. The south wall has five C20 French windows with C18 panelled reveals now looking into the C20 extensions. The north wall has 2 eared chimneypieces with egg-and-dart edging under bolection-moulded friezes. In the centre of the wall is a 6-panelled door in a timber surround under an imbricated frieze below an egg-and-dart cornice. Another identical doorway is in the north-west corner. To the right of each fireplace is a cupboard with C20 glazed doors: each has a pair of fluted Ionic pilasters standing on the dado rail supporting an imbricated frieze below an egg-and-dart cornice.
