Listed Building: MANOR HOUSE (282066)

MUTFORD CHURCH ROAD TM 48 NE 2/37 Manor House - II House. Early C19 front range; the rear range has been much rebuilt and incorporates work of c.1300, C16, late C17 and C19. Front range. Pale yellow brick, hipped slated roof . 2 storeys. 3 bays with flanking pilaster strips; narrow centre bay. Inset sash windows with glazing bars, flat stuccoed lintels; the first floor windows to left and right are blind. 6-panel entrance door, semi-circular fanlight with glazing bars; the doorway is set within a semi-circular arched recess. Wooden bracketed eaves cornice. Rear range. Mainly timber framed, now faced in colourwashed brick; roof of black pantiles. 2 storeys and attic. The part adjacent to the front range contains fragements of one bay of a 2-bay late C13 or early C14 aisled hall from which the aisles have been removed. There is one octagonal arcade post with a much mutilated carved capital. The opposite post is not visible but may survive. The open truss had doubled passing braces halved against the arcade post and tie beam. The braces to the arcade plate and tie beam are missing but the mortices remain. On the west side the arcade plate is fully exposed, with a stop-splayed and tabled scarf joint with transverse key and sallied butts. An intermediate tie beam (cf Purton Green Farmhouse, Stansfield) is placed over this joint. The end truss is missing. The main timbers are numbered as follows: tie beam, arcade plate and arcade post of open truss all IV; additional tie beam and arcade plate V; arcade plate in position of missing truss VI. 2 further bays were added in C16, perhaps when the present floor was inserted in the open hall. Slightly moulded joists are exposed on both floors, but much of the studwork has gone. The roof over the whole of this rear range is C19. Listing NGR: TM4851188503
