Description

TM 48 SE FROSTENDEN LONDON ROAD 1/12 The Hermitage 27/11/54 - II House. The earlier range to the south comprises an early C14 2-bay raised aisle hall with a late C16 parlour addition to the east; early C19 range to north forming double pile plan; C20 additions to west. Timber-framed and plastered with hipped pantiled roof; the C19 range is roughcast-rendered. 2 storeys. Early C19 mullion and transom windows of 2, 3 and 4 lights, with pointed arches within the upper part of the lights and leaded panes in the form of elongated hexagons; to the north the windows have paired boarded shutters. Some C18 square-leaded windows to earlier range. Half-glazed entrance door in C20 addition. The raised-aisle structure has octagonal arcade posts with boldly roll-moulded bases and capitals (now mutilated); the southern side-aisle has been removed and the arcade post is now partly embedded in the external wall. There are massive straight or very slightly curved braces to the arcade plate. There is evidence for 3 tie beams to the open truss: these, together with their associated roof structure, are missing, although some smoke-blackened rafters remain. At the upper end of the hall is an inserted stack. Good exposed timbering to the parlour, with evidence for original windows; exposed joists to the inserted floor in the hall.
