Description

TM 37 NE WISSETT MILL ROAD 5/65 Grove Farmhouse 1-9-53 - II Farmhouse. Late C16/early C17. 2 storeys and attics; T-shaped form. Timber- framed, faced in old, very coarse, roughcast; plaintiles. At the junction of the front and rear ranges, an internal chimney-stack with hexagonal attached shafts, rebuilt in traditional style. 3 windows to front: 2-light and 3-light small-paned C20 casements. 6-panel door with oblong fanlight and flat pediment. The interior of the front range has a 2-cell layout, with one heated and one unheated room divided by a cross-entry leading to the rear wing. The present front door is in the original position. The larger heated room has a fine ovolo-moulded main beam with stepped stops, and an open fireplace with plain timber lintel; the unheated room has chamfered joists with stepped stops. Original upper ceilings: main beams chamfered and step- stopped. A blocked original doorway with rectangular surround on the upper floor and one 2-light casement window with square leaded panes. The roof has one row of clasped purlins and one row of butt purlins with windbraces only one way. The rear wing is largely a C19 brick replacement of an older range: 2 storeys, colourwashed brick, black glazed pantiles. 3--light casement windows, with segmental heads to the ground floor; C20 half-glazed door.
