Description
MUTFORD TM 48 NE 2/34 Mutford Hall
GV II*
House. Dated 1607 in floreated iron letters on facade; the central section and probably the left hand wing have a C16 core. Dairy range added to rear later in C17. H-shape plan; the dairy range attached to the rear of the shorter left hand wing, about 2m out of alignment. Originally largely timber framed, now mainly brick, with a colourwashed brick facade. Plaintiled roof with crest tiles. 2 storeys and attic. The facade has a range of 5 mid C19 large-paned reproduction windows, somewhat smaller than the orignals. C19 doorway, placed almost centrally, with boarded door and gabled hood. Crowstepped gables. The right hand wing has an external stack with 2 detached octagonal flues on moulded bases; a matching stack to the left hand wing was removed in C19. At the rear of the centre section are 2 further stacks, one external with 2 square flues on a moulded base, one internal with 2 detached octagonal flues, also with moulded bases. The rear of the right hand wing is crowstepped, partly obscured by a later brick addition. The dairy range is plastered, with a crowstepped brick gable end and integral stack with 2 later flues on the original octagonal moulded bases. The timber frame of the dairy is intact; there are 2 slatted diamond-mullioned windows at first floor level and evidence for similar ground floor openings. The original hall has a fine early-mid C16 roll-moulded beam and joist ceiling: this room has been divided in later alterations and the joists were concealed at the time of survey. Both wings have cross-beamed ceilings with double convex mouldings and matching cornices; the ceiling in the left hand wing is lower and may be contemporary with the hall. On the first floor the left hand room has a further moulded cross-beamed ceiling, and the right hand room a coved ceiling, probably C17. Late C18 staircase with 2 slender turned balusters per tread, a wreathed handrail and carved tread-ends. In the rear of the centre range are 2 good windows with C19 stained glass, one circular, one ovolo-moulded and apparently C17. Good early plank door to cellar in left hand wing.
