Description

SOUTH ELMHAM ST. JAMES ST. JAMES' LANE TM 38 SW 4/54 Elm Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. Late C16/early C17. 2 storeys and attics. Timber-framed, rendered on the south gable, the remainder encased in later C19 red brick, laid in Flemish Bond; old plaintiles. 2 chimney-stacks, one of plain red brick, set internally, the-other on the rear wall at the north end, with 2 attached square red brick shafts. 3 window range: large-paned sashes, with a single vertical glazing-bar to lights, set in shallow reveals; flat gauged brick arches on the ground floor. Plank entrance door, below a similar gauged arch, set into a 2-storey canted porch with a small 3-sided roof; a sash window in each of the side walls flanking the door, and 3 similar windows on the floor above. 3-cell lobby-entrance form, with only main components uncovered in most of the interior. To the right of the entry, the ground floor room has chamfered main beams and joists with scroll stops; in the room above, the cross-beams of the ceiling are ovolo-moulded. The upper ceilings are original. Roof in 7 bays of irregular width: one row of clasped, and one of unstepped butt purlins, the latter with pared-off ends; arched windbraces. A small C18 wing at rear: single storey, rendered and pantiled. Listing NGR: TM3211380889
