Description

TM 14 SW SPROUGHTON POPLAR LANE 4/49 Poplar Farmhouse - II House. Late C16 and early C17, later C17, C18 extended probably early C19. Timber framed and rendered, colourwashed brick, plain tile roofs. The north-south range hipped at one end. Complex plan comprising east-west probably late C16 wing, and near contemporary north-south range, forming L plan; later C17 former dairy/kitchen, formerly freestanding, now linked by C18 timber framed outshut, and later brick service ranges. Late C18 or early C19 brick front and rear additions. Mostly 2 storeys. Scattered fenstration of C20 casements, some small paned, some leaded. C20 brick porch with part-glazed door on early brick west front. C19 brick stacks including one axially on east-west range, and one on lateral wall of north-south range. Interior: North-south range. Ground floor bar stopped main beams and joists. First floor diamond mullion window and shutter groove. Clasped purlin roof, one tier of collars, roof largely rebuilt C19 reusing earlier timbers. East-west range. Blocked doorway to north. 4-centre arched fireplace, rendered, but probably brick with chamfered arris. Clasped purlin roof with one tier of collars, later rafters and ridge piece.
