Description

BRETTENHAM OLD SCHOOL ROAD 1. 5377 Church Farmhouse TL 95 SE 33/201 23.1.58 II 2. A C15-C16 timber-framed and plastered building but with considerable later alteration. There is a cross wing at the south-east end with an extension to the south-west. The north-east front and the cross wing have been refaced in modern brick. Two storeys and attics. The north-west gable end is a good example of exposed timber-framing with jettied upper storey and gable on fine carved bressumers. The lower bressumer is carved with the initials R.M. and the date 1587. The windows are modern casements set in original framed openings with blocked high level windows on either side. There is an original blocked window in the gable. The main block has a ridge chimney stack with diagonal shafts. The interior has heavy exposed timber-framing, ceiling beams and joists, Tudor brick fireplaces and an original spiral staircase. Listing NGR: TL9680454090
