BURES ST MARY TL 93 SW 14/648 NAYLAND ROAD Hold Farmhouse II
Former farmhouse, said to have been a flax mill. C16, C17, C19. In 2 parallel ranges. Rear range. First floor timber framed, rendered to rear, with partly early C16 brick left hand gable, part C19 right hand gable; ground floor of c1600 English bond brickwork with C19 patching exposed front wall and front range are in C19 brick. Plaintile and slate roofs. 2 storeys. Rear range, 5 bays. North elevation, has 4-centre arched entrance, with 2 orders chamfered brickwork, the hood rendered over. Blocked and containing C20 sash with glazing bars. 2 C20 sashes with glazing bars to left. 1st floor 3-light mullion window with cavetto and roll mouldings, 2 C20 horned sashes with glazing bars. C19 wing to south obscures all but one bay of rear build, treated as one with the extension. 1st floor brick band. C19 2 bay wing with sashes with glazing bars, similar openings to left bay of rear wing. External stack, the ground floor in early C16 brick to left hand gable of rear wing. Stack to rear of C19 wing. Interior. Rear wing. Evidence of original ground floor partitions to left hand bay only. Opposing brick archway in south wall, the south face of Finely cut brickwork in 2 chamfered orders, with moulded hood. Exposed first floor frame. Some exposed ground floor brick in English bond. The first floor formerly jettied to south. Remains of early windows in south wall. Crown post roof of square posts, some with cranked braces.
