NAYLAND WITH WISSINGTON TL 93 SW BURES ROAD 14/939 Barn and Cart Shed 60m NW of Wissington Grove II
Barn and cart shed, originally separate but now joined by later infilling continuous with cart shed range. Barn late C18, cart shed early C19. Timber framed with mostly tarred weatherboarding; high red brick plinths owing to sloping site. Roofs clad in corrugated iron and asbestos. Barn has central through cart entry with gabled porch on east side, the entries now boarded over and replaced by a single door and window. Open lean-tos to east. 4-bay cart shed with loft above. Interior: Barn in 7 bays. Primary-braced frame, largely comprising very heavy components re-used from a C15 or early C16 building, some with roll and ogee moulding and others with concave sides suggesting brick infilling. Re-used tie beams, knee-braced to wallposts. 2 are slightly cambered, with peg holes for crown posts. Clasped purlin roof without principals, the rafters showing housings for collars; all components are re-used. Upper floor inserted 1940s.
