Description

TL 76 SW GAZELEY HIGHAM ROAD 6/41 Bovills Hall II Farmhouse. C15 or early C16 with major alterations of c.1600, C18 and C19. A much altered open-hall house of 2 or 3 cells. One-and-a-half storeys and attics. Timber-framed, mainly encased C19 in flint rubble with red brick quoins. Flemish gable added C19. Plaintiled roof with gabled casement dormers; C17 or C18 gable chimney of gault and red brick with C20 diagonally-set square flues. C20 casements with leaded lights. C19 1-storey lean-to slated porch with C20 glazed entrance door. The 2-bay open hall has part of the central open truss surviving; jowled storey posts with uncambered tie-beam and part of an unchamfered arch brace. Some close-studded walling of a closed truss and the lodged floor joists of a storeyed end room are visible. The 1st floor was inserted into the hall c.1600. The house extended to left and right, and the roof rebuilt, C18. A large mid-C19 2 storey extension to rear is not of special interest. Included despite later alterations because of the good quality C15 core. Listing NGR: TL7203264166
