Description

WICKHAM SKEITH TM 06 NE 2/143 Elm Farmhouse -- II Farmhouse. Late C16/early-mid C17, in 2 phases. Timber framed and plastered. The front is decorated with closely-spaced diagonal battens forming a broad herringbone design. Thatched roof. Late C19 decorative bargeboards to gable ends. 4 cells. 1½ storeys. Windows are uPVC small-paned casements of 1980's. Central lobby entrance has C19 doorway with cornice and 6-panel door. Cross-entry to right has a further C19 6-panel door, the upper 2 panels glazed. French windows to extreme left. One gabled dormer with C17 moulded lintol and heavy late C19 bargeboards. 2 flat-roofed dormers to left. Internal stack, the shaft rebuilt C20. External stack against left gable end. Interior. Most of timbers concealed. Section to left of stack perhaps the earlier: one ground floor room has substantial plain joists, set flat. To right of stack, a hall and service end. Hall ceiling has C17 cross-beams with nicked ogee stop-chamfers. Wide lintol over blocked fireplace. Service cell has a little exposed studding on upper floor and 2 blocked windows with ovolo mullions (front wall). Roof timbers largely concealed; side purlins at right end. C19 straight stair tunnelled through stack. Listing NGR: TM0990668147
