Description
KENTON EYE ROAD
TM 16 NE
1/136 Messuage Farmhouse
- II
Former farmhouse. Mid C14 section to right with successive in-line additions
of mid C16, C18 and C19, forming a single long range. Part timber framed, the
C18 and C19 work in brick, all with textured render applied in 1986. Pantiled
roof. C14 section to right is 1 1/2 storeys, the remainder 2 storeys. Main part
has 3 windows: late C19 6-paned sashes to left and right; to centre is a C19
small-paned former shop window and above a 4-paned sash window. 1 1/2-storey
section has a further 6-paned sash window and a small 2-light casement. 2
stacks with plain red brick shafts, both in the 2-storey section, the older
one to the right. 2 mid C20 doors to rear. Interior. C14 section comprises
the upper bay and part of the lower bay of a former open hall. The open truss
has an arched-braced cambered tie beam, the centre portion cut away. This
carries octagonal queen-posts, broach-stopped to a square base; the base and
head have a single bold roll-moulding. Intact braces to the collar and arcade
plates, all nailed in position. Roof has heavily sooted coupled rafters.
This is a very early example of a queen-post roof. Widely-spaced C14
studding. The upper end wall has a heavier central stud with a pair of
reverse-curved braces to the tie beam. The rear wallplate has a stop-splayed
scarf joint although the arcade plates have edge-halved scarfs. Evidence for
doorway into former parlour end. Right gable end has plain studding, perhaps
early C17; the inserted floor is supported on a ledge of re-used moulded
timber. 2-bay C16 section, one narrow bay containing the stack, with evidence
for a former lobby entry doorway. Both floors have chamfered-joist ceilings
and some good heavy studding with evidence for original windows. Good C16
moulded door on upper floor. Roof has a single row of butt purlins with
cranked wind braces.
