5/40 Grange Farmhouse
GV II
Farmhouse, built in mid C16, extended late C16 and remodelled early C19. 3-
cell plan with long service crosswing. 2 storeys, the crosswing with attics.
Timber-framed, originally plastered; the main range was encased in early C19
red brick, and the remainder in mid C20 common brick. However, at the rear of
the main range is a substantial area of fine late C16 pargetting, now within
the roof space, and more is possibly encased in brickwork. The strapwork
design is in small geometric shapes, principally squares surrounded by bands
of lozenges, the panels being roughcast. At an unaltered diamond-mullioned
window is quoining in imitation of stonework. Concrete pantiled roofs,
formerly plaintiled. An axial chimney recapped in C20 red brick but with much
of C17 lower shaft remaining. C19 casements, mainly of 3 lights, those at
ground storey with transomes. Cambered heads. Mid C19 gabled slated entrance
porch with boarded door. Heavy C16 moulded framing in main range, mainly
concealed. The cross-wing to left has complete and interesting late C16
framing fully exposed: arch-studbraced walling. Floor structures at 2 levels
have very closely-spaced on-edge oak joists (an early instance). Diamond-
mullioned windows with later slatted louvres in a nearly unaltered cheese-
room. Butt purlin roof with closely-spaced square-sectioned rafters. Despite
exterior remodelling, a good example of a C16 farmhouse. Unoccupied and in
poor condition at date of survey.
