Description

PETTAUGH CROWFIELD ROAD TM 15 NE 4/129 Pettaugh Hall 9.12.55 - II Former manor house. Mid C16 with remodelling of c.1630 and C19. Originally of 3-cell cross-entry plan. 2 storeys. Timber framed and plastered. Plaintiled roof; an axial chimney of c.1630 has a square shaft with a central pilaster. Two C19 chimneys to right have twin square flues and heavy square caps (the C17 chimney was also recapped). Late C19 casements with transomes at ground storey, C18 casements at 1st storey. Two C17 2-storey entrance porches, gabled; one at lobby-entrance, one at former cross-entry: each has an early C19 6-panelled door, the upper pair of panels glazed, and a simple pediment above. Some good mid C16 framing exposed: very closely-spaced studding, broad broach-stopped chamfers to main beams. The hall fireplace has a lintel with chamfered arched soffit. Circa 1630, a fine plaster ceiling was added to the parlour. Moulded ribs divide the ceiling into panels, with fleurs-de-lys and acorns at intersections. In the centre of several panels are impressed with the initials "F.A." (the Fastolfe family were at Pettaugh Hall in early C17). A vinescroll freize forms a cornice. Full C17 oak wainscotting, with arcading above the fireplace. The chamber above also has traces of a scheme of moulded plasterwork. The service cell to right was truncated in C19, and alterations made to rear (painted brickwork). A small wing to rear of parlour is of C16/C17 origin. Listing NGR: TM1668558981
