Description

TL 96 NW THURSTON GREAT GREEN 1/144 Poplar Farmhouse -- II Farmhouse, mid C16 with alterations of early C19. 2 storeys. 3-cell lobby entrance plan. Timber-framed and plastered. Slated C19 roof: an axial chimney, the shaft rebuilt in C19 of red brick with quoins of gault brick. Early C19 small-pane casements. Early C19 gabled entrance porch with slated roof and 6-panelled door. A rear service wing added in early C19: Gault brick. Slated roof. 2 storeys, 2 windows. Horizontally-sliding small-pane casements at 1st storey and casements with segmental heads below. An open porch in the re-entrant angle has a swept sheet-metal roof. Interior: In the hall is some heavy mid C16 exposed framing. Main beams with broad chamfers, and large unchamfered floor joists. A wide lintelled open fireplace has piers of limestone blocks probably taken from the Abbey of St Edmundsbury after its dissolution in 1539. The blocks have shafts of C12/C13 appearance. Remainder of timber framing mainly concealed. Listing NGR: TL9384166106
