Description

STOKE ASH TM 17 SW 1/75 Gardiner's Hall 29.7.55 -- II Former farmhouse. Mid C17, in 2 wings forming L-shape plan. East wing is dated 1666 with initials 'G' over 'EB'. Early C20 alterations. Timber framed, part plastered. Early C20 south front: ground floor in red brick, upper floor with imitation studding and brick nogging. South gable end of east wing has projecting tie beam with vine trail carving and the date and initials. Plaintiled roof. 2 storeys and attic. South front has 4 windows, sashes without glazing bars, some tripartite. 2 doorways. To left is a good C17 plank door with studded panelled face; the ovolo-moulded doorframe is probably of c.1900. To right is an C18 door with 6 raised fielded panels. Various casement windows to north and east, mostly of mid C20 standard type. One slatted window to north. East wing has an internal stack, the base of the axial shaft with an inset panel and a moulded brick band. One-storey pantiled lean-to in angle of the 2 wings. Interior. West range has C17 panelled cross-partition, not in situ. Good early C18 panelled room in east wing, damaged in 1980's by sandblasting. Interior not fully examined. Listing NGR: TM1247470966
