Description

MELLIS THE COMMON (NORTH WEST TM 07 SE SIDE) 3/18 Pountney Hall GV II House. Late C16 or early C17 for Clarke family, reduced in size and altered c.1810. Timber frame with clay lump additions. Plastered. Steeply pitched plaintiled roofs. Once a much larger half H plan house, remaining 3 cell block was probably service range originally. 2 storeys and attics. Front has a 6 raised panelled part glazed door to right of centre, hooded architrave, flanking early C19 3-light glazing bar metal frame casements with cusped Gothic heads. First floor 3-light glazing bar casements. Boxed eaves. A stack inserted towards left in front roof slope. Right gable end extruded stack with projecting brick bands, exposed plates and double purlins. Left gable end similar 3 and 4-light casements with Gothic heads, hood moulds. To rear a 6 raised panelled architraved door, flanking 3-light glazing bar casements, 2 lights on first floor to left. To rear right an early dairy bay separately roofed with a parallel ridge, 2 light casements, brackets to exposed plates, single purlins, raised eaves to rear. Attached to right of main range and dairy bay are 2 parallel C19 clay lump service outshuts with lower parallel roofs, double doors, 3-light casement, gable end pentice board. Interior not inspected.
