Description

ATHELINGTON TM 27 SW 5/1 Athelington Hall (formerly listed 29.7.55 as Athelington Hall and farm) GV II Farmhouse. C17, in 3 phases forming L-shape plan. Mid C20 addition to left. The core of the house is an early C17 parlour cross-wing; this now comprises the right hand cell of the front range. The rear wing is probably an early- mid C17 replacement for earlier work. In later C17 the present stack was inserted and the front range extended beyond it to form another room. Timber framed with C20 panelled plasterwork. Roof of double Roman tiles except for one slope of rear wing which has clay pantiles. 2 storeys and attic. 2 windows, mid C20 single-pane casements. Lobby entry with mid C20 gabled porch and door. Internal stack, the shaft of mid C20 date. Right gable end has a projecting tie beam supported on consoles and carved with a repeated design of foliage. The cross-beam at first floor level is also richly carved and supported on broader but flatter consoles. Below these consoles the corner posts have a vertical band with carved motifs. Internally there is remains of further decorative work on the opposite gable end. To the rear, part of a carved console and corner post; also remains of a window with ovolo mullions. A carved cross-beam at first floor level is mostly concealed. In the gable is a collar carved with an intricate geometric design based on linked rectangles; original panelled plasterwork with herringbone infill. Both the parlour and chamber above have cross-beamed ceilings, the remainder of the structure concealed. In the rear wing the main components of the frame are visible. Roof of parlour block concealed; the later C17 addition has 2 rows of diminished stepped butt purlins. Rear wing has butt purlin roof. Remains of medieval moat. Listing NGR: TM2070471156
