Description

LAXFIELD FRAMLINGHAM ROAD TM 27 SE 4/45 Chestnut Tree Farmhouse -- II Farmhouse. Mid C16 with early C17 rear wing and early C19 alterations. Timber framed, pebbledash render at front, plastered at rear. Front slope of roof is slated, rear slope has glazed black pantiles. 2 storeys. 3-cell form. 4 windows, irregularly-spaced sashes with glazing bars. C19 4-panel door in 2 leaves, with glazed upper panels; pilasters and entablature. Mid C20 glazed lean-to porch. Gable stack to left with white brick shaft. The main stack between hall and parlour was removed in mid C20. Some exposed framing, with evidence for diamond-mullioned windows at the service end (one in situ). Part of one 4-centre arched cross-entry doorway. Cross partition at service end removed. Plain crownpost roof: square crown posts braced to the collar purlin; the crown post in the open truss over the hall chamber is stop-chamfered. The C16 rafters were cut in early C19 when a shallower-pitch roof was made. Small rear wing, probably a dairy, with intact first floor framing and an altered queen-post roof.
