Description
HELMINGHAM OTLEY ROAD
TM 15 NE
4/109 Elm Farmhouse
II*
Farmhouse; early C17, with a cross-wing of late C14 or early C15 to right. 3-
cell cross passage entrance plan. Two storeys and attics. Timber framed and
plastered; a C17 exposed gable tiebeam to left is embattled. Plaintiled
roofs; an axial C17 chimney of red brick and another to rear of parlour cell
to left, both have oblong shafts with complex moulded plinths. Mainly mid C20
casements; some C19 casements at rear. Early C19 6-panelled entrance door
with pediment. In a parlour to left is a plaster ceiling with early C17
motifs including roses and fleur-de-lys, and an elliptical arched fireplace.
A 2-bay cross-wing to right has massive medieval framing: widely spaced
studding. An open truss in the 2-bay chamber has long 2-centred arch braces
to the cambered tie beam and an altered coupled rafter roof. A smoke
blackened partition demonstrates that an open hall stood on the site of the
C17 range. A further bay was added to front of cross wing in C17, and a l 1/2
storey wing to the right. All C17 roofs are of wind braced butt purlin type.
A partial medieval moat.
