Description
EARL STONHAM BLACKSMITH'S LANE
TM 06 SE
1/87 Cherry Tree Farmhouse
- II
Former farmhouse. Early or mid C16 with late C16 extension. 2 storeys and
attics. 3-cell cross-passage entrance plan. Timber framed and plastered.
Plaintiled roof with axial chimney of red brick. C20 casements with some
boarded shutters of possibly C19 origin. Panelled C20 entrance door. Massive
and complete timber framing fully exposed. Several diamond-mullioned windows,
now blocked. Close-studwork, and crownpost roof, with 2-way plank bracing to
the square post at the open truss. The house was probably "reversed" in late
C16: the former parlour to right was subdivided and given a pair of 4-centred
arched service doorways, and a ladder stair with triangular block treads. The
former service cell to left was demolished, and a parlour cell built upon its
site. A new cross passage was formed at what was originally the "upper" end
of the hall. An open fireplace with a wide lintel in the hall may possibly be
a part of the earlier phase.
