Description

TL 97 SE WALSHAM LE WILLOWS WEST STREET 2/83 Premises of Mr D J Cobbold GV II House. Early and late C16 with c19 front. Timber-framed, rendered on sides and rear, faced in mid-c19 red brick; black glazed pantiles. 2 storeys, part with attic; a single-storey lean-to with fully hipped roof against the right gable end. End chimney-stacks, both with plain shafts including Tudor bricks, on the left set within the gable, on the right external. All windows are late C20 replacements in the same style as formerly: one 3-light and one 2-light plain casements to the upper floor; on the ground floor, one 2-light and one 3-light with transome and glazing bars, both with wedge lintel and vermiculated keystone. The central doorway has a projecting brick surround with a corbelled-out top of diagonally projecting bricks and an inner segmental arch with vermiculated keystone. Interior in 2 closely-dated sections. The left side, including the entrance passage, contains 2 bays with a central truss which has a cambered tie-beam and deep arched braces (one removed); in the centre of the tie the base of a crown-post, and another in the partition wall to the right of the entrance passage. The roof above has the rafters and collars covered, and side-purlins pegged against the rafters. Main beam in the ground-floor ceiling below this truss with very wide chamfer and curved stepped stops (cf. a similar beam at the neighbouring Home Farmhouse, Item 2/82). This may well be inserted, and the stack at the left end is set within a half bay, possibly a smoke-bay initially, though most evidence has been removed. To the right of the entry the ground floor room has main beam and joists, said to be plain, rough, and set flat, but all boxed in. On the upper floor a curious doubled partition between the 2 parts of the frame with a narrow space between. The house has no name. Listing NGR: TL9864570938
