Description

TM 07 SW WALSHAM LE WILLOWS CROWNLAND ROAD 3/43 Crownland Hall 15/11/54 II House, on a large rectangular moated site. C17, in 2 closely-dated phases. Part timber-framed, part red brick, with old plaintiles. 2 storeys and attics; L-shaped form. The earlier range, aligned north-south, is timber- framed and rendered with end chimney-stacks. Both stacks have 2 short attached barrel shafts on a rectangular base, the stack on the north forming part of a brick gable end which has 2 2-light original windows to the ground and first floors, and one set centrally at the apex, all with hollow-chamfered brick mullions, and all blocked. Along the east side, 4 flat-headed dormers with lead cheeks and 3-light diamond-leaded casement windows; 3 12-paned sash windows in cased frames to the first floor, one blank, and similar windows to the ground floor; 2 half-glazed doors with flat bracketed pediments. Little timbering exposed inside: ground-floor ceiling at the south end has exposed joists set on edge; remainder boxed-in. Roof, partly exposed, in 9 bays: windbraces, butt purlins, partly stepped. The slightly later main range, aligned east-west, is in.colour-washed red brick, laid in English Bond. 3 12- pane sash windows to the upper floor, one 16-pane and one 20-pane to the ground floor, both with segmental arches to frames and surrounds; all windows in deep reveals. A flat-roofed C19 brick porch and half-glazed inner door. On the original rear wall, 2 matching external stacks, each with 3 high attached octagonal shafts on bases decorated with 2 rows of diaper-patterned brick. An early c19 2-storey brick extension with a shallow-pitched roof running into the main roof slope forms a corridor along the south side, so that the chimney-stacks are now internal. 3 12-pane sash windows to the upper floor, 5 16-pane to the ground floor, all in deep reveals with segmental arches. Doric portico with fluted columns; half-glazed door with 2 leaves, now blocked. The interior of this range is largely early C19 in style: entrance hall with open string stair, bracketed tread-ends, stick balusters, wreathed handrail; 6-panelled doors, 2 with panelled architraves and linings; panelled window-shutters; one raised cast-iron grate with Egyptian decoration; ceiling-beams boxed in. Roof of attic in 7 bays: 2 rows of unstepped butt purlins, cambered collars; assembly marks to principal rafters. Listing NGR: TM0096470194
