Description

THORNDON TM 16 NE 4/73 Low Barn Cottage - II House. C15 with 2-cell C16 cross-wing to right, extending to the rear. Renovated c.1976. Timber framed and plastered, pantiled roof. 1½ storeys to left, 2 storey cross-wing. The cross-wing has an end jetty on probably original brackets. Mid C20 casement windows; one gabled dormer. Stack at junction of the 2 sections, with a small mid C20 shaft. Mid C20 porch and entrance door in side wall of wing. 1½-storey section comprises half of a former open hall; the open truss, with cambered tie beam and arched braces meeting at the centre, is embedded in the gable end wall. No evidence for crown-post visible. One medieval wallplate has a stop-splayed scarf joint, the other an edge-halved scarf, presumably of later date. Inserted floor has heavily chamfered bridging beam with solid braces to the wallposts (one renewed). Joists concealed. In the cross-wing, some intact C16 studding with steep reverse-curved wall braces. Interior not fully examined. Listing NGR: TM1550169228
