TM 16 SW
EARL STONHAM
2/134 Former farmhouse, 100m
- north of Westwood Hall
- II
Part of former farmhouse, early C17. 2 storeys with attic. The surviving
cross-passage and service cell of a house which was probably of 3-cell plan.
Timber-framed and plastered. Plaintiled roof; an end chimney of red brick.
C19 and C20 casements. C19 6-panelled entrance door at cross-entry position.
Above is a good carved oak pediment; in the tympanum is the date 1650 over
initials B.G., both being within a shield and enriched with carved foliage and
traces of red and green original colouring; this may be original to the house
but construction details are of earlier C17 type. Good close-studding and
chamfered floor joists laid flat. Wind-braced butt-purlin roof. A pantiled
C19 rear outshut. Associated with partial mediaeval moat.
