Description
RATTLESDEN UPPER STREET
TM 95 NE
3/124 Goldmartin
- (formerly listed under High
15.11.54 Street)
GV II
House, at one time village workhouse. Mid (or perhaps early) C16. A 3-bay
open hall to left and a storeyed bay to right; a lower extension of C17 to
extreme right. 2 storeys. Timber-framed and plastered. Concrete plaintiled
roof, hipped and gabletted to left. An axial chimney of C17/C18 red brick.
c19 and C20 casements, some with leaded lights. A lean-to C20 entrance porch
with plaintiled roof; the door is boarded and battened in the C17 manner, but
may be a C20 copy. The open hall has heavy tension-studbraced walling and two
plain open trusses: there is no smoke blackening. Crownpost roof: the posts
are square with slender 2-way braces. The right hand room has unchamfered
floor joists of medieval form. In mid C17 or later an upper floor was
inserted into all 3 bays of the open hall. The right hand block was also
added in C17 and a clasped-purlin system added to the earlier roof. A 3-bay
open hall is a rare occurrence in Suffolk, normally associated with
guildhalls; but a guildhall is known to have occupied another site in the
village.
