Description

COTTON STONHAM ROAD TM 06 NE 2/23 Church Farmhouse 29.7.55 GV II Farmhouse. In 2 phases: early C17 parlour cross-wing to left; possibly earlier hall range to right. Timber framed and plastered, the cross-wing retaining some old panelled plasterwork. Thatched roof. Hall range 1½ storeys, cross-wing 2 storeys and attic. Front of wing has overhanging gable; the tie beam is carved with repeated ornament along its edge and has initials or a merchant's mark in the centre (now indistinct). The soffit of the tie beam shows mortices for window mullions and small diamond glazing bars. Various casement windows, mainly of C20. Old square-leaded attic window in wing. One eyebrow dormer. Doorway in gable end of wing: C19 6-panel door (upper 2 panels glazed), thatched gabled open porch. Internal stack in hall range has C19 axial shaft. Massive external stack at rear of wing, probably C17. Interior not examined. Listing NGR: TM0707966876
