Description

TL 96 SW THURSTON BEYTON ROAD 4/141 Thurston House 15.11.54 -- II House, c.1750 with alterations of C19 and rear wing with possibly earlier core. Red brick: a broad band of gauged brick at 1st floor level and another at base of parapet incorporating a moulded cornice: limestone copings, and ball finial at either end; parapet gables. Slated roof. 2 storeys and attics. 7 windows: central 3-window block slightly set-forward. Sashes with flat arches of gauged brick; small panes and flush frames, the upper storey windows with louvred shutters. Windows 3 and 5 at both storeys are two-thirds width. Good C18 entrance doorway: sunk pilasters, an open pediment enriched with egg-and-dart and Greek Key, and console brackets beneath. A semi- circular fanlight within the pediment. Pair of half-glazed mid C19 entrance doors with border panes. A large semi-circular mid C19 entrance porch, fully- glazed with 5 tall lights between half columns: flat roof with wrought iron balustrading, half-glazed door, curved in conformity with the porch. 5 C18 dormers, with alternately segmental and gabled heavily-moulded pediments: small-pane casements. Gable chimneys of red brick rebuilt in C19. To rear is an C18 service wing of 3-cell form and possibly with C17 core: early C19 windows with cast iron diamond-pane casements. At centre rear is a mid C18 staircase block with mid-height round-headed sash. Set-back to right of main elevation is a late C19 extension. 2 storeys; 3 windows; sashes with small panes. Interior: mid C18 staircase with wreathed handrail, turned balusters and carved console brackets at each tread. Deep moulded cornices, several rooms with large sunk panels. Interior refurbishment in progress at date of survey. Listing NGR: TL9246964646
