Colbys Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Early C16. Timber framed and plastered except for the gables
which are weatherboarded. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys. 3-cell form. Various
mid C20 casement windows. One original window at front and 3 at rear, all
with heavy diamond mullions. Mid C20 half-glazed door into service end. Part
of a 4-centre arched doorway into the parlour, apparently in situ: this is an
unusual position for a C16 doorway and may indicate dual occupancy of the
house. Internal stack, the shaft rebuilt. An intact timber frame of good
quality with both curved and reverse-curved bracing. Closely-spaced plain
joists in hall and service end. The cross-partition between these 2 rooms has
been removed but against the cross-passage is a plank and muntin screen,
largely intact. One-bay parlour. There is evidence to suggest the stack is a
later insertion, replacing a stud and plaster flue. Newel stair, contemporary
with stack. Queen-post roof. The framing of the end wall over the parlour
suggests the roof was originally hipped at this end.
