Description

GISLINGHAM THORNHAM ROAD (SOUTH SIDE) TM 0771 6/62 Church Farm House GV II House. C15, floor and stack inserted and extended late C16, further extended in early C17, altered C20. Timber frame, plastered. Steeply pitched plaintiled and machine pantiled roofs. Originally a 2 bay open hall with a storeyed lower bay, stack inserted in upper bay and parlour added; later 3 bay addition extending forward to form a T on plan. 1 storey and attic with 2 storey and attic later range. To front early range has 3 small glazing bar casements, that to centre in place of original cross passage entrance, a 2- light gabled dormer over former hall. Ridge stack where 3 builds meet, axial to original right bay, 3 conjoined diagonally set shafts. Beyond stack in series is C16 parlour with a break in roof to rear. Rear cross passage entrance in a C20 lean-to, mixed casements, 3 gabled 2-light dormers. Later range extending forwards has an entrance towards rear with a part glazed 6 panelled door, C20 glazing bar casements, a 2-light gabled dormer, an inserted late C17 or early C18 stack towards front, axial on ridge with a rebuilt cap, front gable end pentice boards. Interior: rebates for 2 service doorways from cross passage, some exposed studding of large scantling, service end stop chamfered cross axial binding beam. Hall has inserted stop chamfered axial binding beam, joists and fireplace bressumer. Parlour has stop chamfered axial binding beam, joists and storey posts. Hall open truss removed leaving a tenon to an arched brace in post, part of a large 4-light diamond mullioned hall window remains in largely rebuilt upper bay,tension bracing in partition to solar. Early roof retains closed truss, plain crown post with an arched brace to collar purlin over solar, smoke blackened rafters. Raised cambered tie beams flank inserted stack, 4 centred arched chamfered brick fireplace in parlour chamber. C16 roof has butt purlins, arched windbraces, collars to principals. C17 range has close studding with chamfered mid-rails, a moulded storey post, stop chamfered cross axial binding beams and joists, arched and reverse cranked braces to cambered tie beams, reverse cranked arched braces in walling.
