Description

CREETING ST. MARY LOW LANE TM 05 NE 4/60 All Saints Hall 9-12-55 - II House; mid C16, with alterations principally of early C17. 2 storeys. Timber- framed and plastered, with some C18 pargetting of both herringbone and cable- pattern. Plaintiled roof (partly renewed with concrete plaintiles); a fine axial early C17 chimney of red brick: a set of 3 octagonal shafts on moulded bases. An external early C17 chimney of orange/buff bricks partly rebuilt in C19. Mainly C20 casements with transomes; two C16 chamfered diamond mullioned windows restored and glazed. C20 panelled entrance door with open gabled porch on posts. A central C16 range is aligned east-west; the gable tie-beam is cantilevered with brackets. Good quality close-studding with arch wind- bracing. Two blocked 1st storey doorways with 4-centred arched heads. Wind- braced clasped-purlin roof. Three C17 extensions: a parlour block of c.1600 on the south side has good quality framing with close-studwork, and a fine contemporary wall-painting of which a major fragment survives. The scheme is in blue and grey with figures, stylized foliage and Classical pilasters. The north wall of the chamber has the major part of the work, but a frieze continues around the room, suggesting a much larger composition. Listing NGR: TM0928856940
