6/126 Westleygreen Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Early C16 with alterations of several dates. 2 storeys, and 1
storey with attics. Timber-framed and plastered; the central parlour block
has a long-wall jettied upper floor with partially-exposed joist ends.
Plaintiled roofs. A large axial chimney has a rebuilt shaft of C18 red
brickwork. C19 small-pane casements. C19 boarded entrance door with small
open C20 porch. The parlour block has good unmoulded 1st floor joists and
close-studwork; its crown-pose roof projects from the left-hand gable
suggesting that the building once continued to left (the lower cell to left is
of C17/C18). In the parlour is a large blocked open fireplace and a C16
arched doorway into the lower range to right; this has a C16 clasped purlin
roof, but all rafters are reused from a smoke-blackened mediaeval open hall.
A further small C16 wing at the rear completes a complex plan, which must
result from some enigmatic changes in layout early in the history of the
house.
